Marvelous cello
by Brian Lisus
You may have noticed eksewhere on this page that I'm interested in
selling my "skull" cello. That is because I've just acquired a
wonderful instrument made by Brian Lisus, in South Africa. You can
see and hear his instruments on his website, violinafrica.co.za, but
that hardly does justice to the physical and tonal beauty of this
instrument. It is easily the most beautiful cello I've seen -
impeccable construction and a gorgeous light yellow finish. But
that's insignificant compared to its tone, feel, and flexibility.
Obviously, words (mine, anyway) aren't going to be adequate. I
encourage you to visit Brian's site!

They look wonderful. Can you give us some idea how much he charges?
Perhaps translating to Dollars, pounds or Euros as a rough
equivalent?

Hello Starmender
Having watched Bill's cello being built and
having been one of the few who had the very real pleasure (if only
far too short) of putting in some time "playing it in" before it was
flown to the States, I can just add that there are a number of
professional cellists in Cape Town who are looking at their lifelong
instruments somewhat oddly - and wondering which bank to enter after
hours ...
Ask a player about his cello's response, evenness
of tone, smoothness, sustain, colour, plead with them to allow you
an hour of playing time - but, in this current climate of wildly
fluctuating exchange rates, asking prices of anyone but the maker is
really just a waste of time.
Why don't you e-mail Brian
directly and chat to him - he's truly a very pleasant
fellow.
cheers edi

As Edi says, exchange rates fluctuate like my intonation, so I
suggest you contact Brian. I also hesitate because I think I just
about "stole" this cello! The more I play it the more dazzled I am!

If it's anywhere near as lovely as that blonde beauty of a cello on
his website, you have something to be proud of - and if it plays as
beautifully as it appears, I don't know how you could even catch
your breath!

Funny you should mention that -- "Mischa" is that very cello. And
believe me, as gorgeous as it is, it plays even more beautifully.

Marvellous cello
by Brian Lisus
As a fellow luthier I've known Brian for 15 years. His
craftsmanship is always absolutely impeccable, but tonally this
cello is the best instrument I've heard - the resonance combining
warmth and power is truly impressive. Pity it didn't make it to the
International Competition in Cremona as intended - it would have had
a good chance of taking the Gold for tone!
